Tide for freelancers
A no-fuss UK business account that handles invoicing, chasing and expense tracking so you can focus on client work — and lets you claim up to £200 cashback with REFER200.

Priya Raman writes the practical, task-focused guides on Business Account Referral: what counts as card spend, what to do in your first 30 days, and how to fix a promotion that has not paid out. She previously worked in bookkeeping for UK micro-businesses and tests every step of a process before publishing it.

What freelancers actually need from a business account
Most freelancers don't need a feature-heavy banking app. They need three things: a clean way to receive client payments, an effortless invoicing flow that includes chasing, and tidy data when it's time to file Self Assessment. Tide delivers all three on its Free plan.
Invoicing that doesn't get in the way
Build and send a branded invoice from the app in under a minute. Set payment terms, add your logo, and Tide automatically matches incoming payments to the invoice when funds arrive. Read receipts and automated reminders on paid plans take the awkwardness out of chasing late payers.
Expense categorisation for Self Assessment
Every Tide transaction is auto-tagged with a category (software, travel, equipment, marketing, etc.). When January comes, your end-of-year expense totals are already calculated. Plug into FreeAgent, Xero or QuickBooks and your accountant can work directly from the synced data.
The tax-pot habit
Decide a tax-reserve approach with your accountant, then move the chosen amount after each client payment into a clearly separated balance. Tide Instant Saver can be one place to hold a reserve, but the rate is variable and the correct reserve depends on your tax position, allowable expenses and payment schedule.
Why freelancers use Tide specifically
- Free plan with no monthly fee.
- App-based application, subject to Tide’s identity and business checks.
- Invoicing included on the Free plan, subject to the current plan allowance.
- A separate REFER200 promotion that eligible new applicants can check against Tide’s current terms.
Plan progression
Stay on Free until the included transfer allowance is regularly exceeded or you want enhanced invoicing features, then upgrade to Smart. Pro and Max are usually overkill for solo freelancers.
How REFER200 fits a freelance income
The £75 card-spend condition is based on £100 of eligible Tide card transactions within 30 days. The £125 Instant Saver condition requires £5,000 to be deposited within seven days and held for 30 days. A freelancer should not tie up a tax reserve or working-capital buffer solely for a promotion: check that the cash is genuinely available and that the current Tide terms apply. See how to use REFER200 and try the offer calculator.
A practical freelance monthly workflow
The useful test is whether the account removes a recurring piece of administration without making tax reserves, cash availability or accounting data harder to manage.
- Send the client invoice with the agreed payment terms and store any project reference you will need for reconciliation.
- When payment arrives, check the matched invoice and attach any supporting receipt or client note while the work is fresh.
- Review expenses weekly, correct categories that are wrong and keep receipts for your accounting records.
- Move the tax-reserve amount you agreed with your accountant to a separate balance, without assuming a universal percentage fits your situation.
- At month end, reconcile the accounting feed and review whether your transfer, invoicing or foreign-currency needs justify a different provider or plan.
Before applying, use the business-account opening checklist. If you are considering the promotion, use the eligibility checker as an advisory step and confirm the current Tide terms.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be VAT-registered to use Tide?+
No. Tide works for both VAT-registered and non-registered freelancers. The app surfaces VAT helpers if you are registered.
Can I invoice in foreign currencies?+
Tide is GBP-first. For frequent multi-currency invoicing, use Wise or Revolut Business alongside Tide.
Is REFER200 worth it for freelancers?+
Yes — up to £200 cashback for opening an account you'd open anyway. Even the £75 card-spend portion alone is straightforward to claim from normal software and subscription spend.
What if my income is irregular — can I still claim REFER200?+
The £75 card-spend portion needs £100 of spend in 30 days, which most working freelancers clear without trying. The £125 saver portion needs £5,000 you can lock for 30 days — if cash flow is tight, you can still earn the £75 alone.
Does Tide replace my accounting software?+
Not entirely. Tide gives you categorised transaction data and basic P&L visibility. For Self Assessment, sync to FreeAgent, Xero or QuickBooks for a full bookkeeping setup.
Can freelancers use Tide on their personal name?+
Yes — sole-trader accounts are opened in your personal name with an optional trading name. You can switch to a Ltd structure later and open a separate Tide Ltd account.
What's the cheapest plan for a part-time freelancer?+
Free. Most part-time freelancers stay on Free indefinitely. Move to Smart when you regularly exceed the free transfer allowance or need enhanced invoicing.
Does Tide help with quarterly Making Tax Digital filings?+
Indirectly — Tide's data feeds into accounting tools that handle MTD submissions. Tide itself doesn't submit to HMRC.
