| Category | Score | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Cost at realistic volume | 4.5/5 | A strong £0/month starting point, with a clear upgrade path to more transfers, cards and tools as the business grows. |
| Account protection | 4/5 | Eligible ClearBank deposits are FSCS-protected up to £120,000, but the two-account model is more complex than a single licensed bank. |
| Day-to-day tooling | 4.8/5 | Invoicing, expense capture, accounting integrations, multiple accounts, team cards and optional company formation in one app. |
| Support and switching | 4/5 | In-app chat across all tiers with a fraud line, and CASS supported for eligible businesses. No 24/7 phone line like Starling. |
| Offer value | 4.5/5 | Up to £200 through two clear components—an attractive boost when opening a new Tide account with REFER200. |

Tide is a business financial platform, not a bank. Tide states that it is trusted by over 2 million sole traders, freelancers and limited companies worldwide, and separate 2026 reporting cited more than 900,000 UK SMEs. It offers ClearBank-powered business bank accounts and some PPS-powered e-money accounts. For most day-to-day UK business banking — receiving payments, paying suppliers, holding a working balance, issuing invoices, tracking expenses, plugging into Xero or QuickBooks — that distinction is invisible. For larger balances or international workflows it starts to matter, and we cover both below.
Our overall verdict: Tide is one of the best places to start a new UK business account. The £0/month Free plan gives you a capable platform from day one, while invoicing, expense categorisation, accounting integrations, Tide Instant Saver and optional company formation give you more ways to run the business without piecing together extra tools. Open with REFER200 and you can add up to £200 cashback to the launch package.
How I reviewed Tide
I checked Tide's published pricing and product pages against what the app actually offers, walked the account-opening and REFER200 referral journey to confirm where the code is entered and what a new applicant sees, compared Tide's features against eight other UK providers using the same criteria, reviewed the FCA register entries and FSCS position for the account types Tide issues, and modelled the practical deadlines attached to both cashback components. Full process on our review methodology page.
What Tide actually is
Tide is a business financial platform. Tide itself is not a bank. Tide offers ClearBank-powered business bank accounts and some PPS-powered e-money accounts, so account protection depends on which account you hold. Tide Platform Limited is FCA-authorised under firm reference 900843 for relevant e-money and payment services, and separately regulated for credit and insurance broking under firm reference 718743.
Why growing businesses choose Tide
- Sole traders and freelancers who want a free starter account, simple invoicing, and clean expense data to hand to an accountant or feed into Self Assessment.
- New limited companies that want company formation and banking in a single application, or that have already incorporated and want the fastest path to a working business account.
- Contractors running through their own Ltd, where the £125 Instant Saver step of REFER200 fits naturally over a retained-earnings buffer.
- Founders who value mobile-first workflows, in-app support, automatic transaction categorisation and integrations with FreeAgent, Xero and QuickBooks.
When to compare a different account
- Businesses that handle large cash takings. Cash deposits go through PayPoint or the Post Office and incur percentage fees with caps — fine for occasional use, painful as a primary workflow.
- Heavy international payers. Tide's FX product is functional but Revolut Business and Wise typically come out cheaper at volume.
- Businesses that need branch-based support or relationship banking. Tide is in-app, by design.
- Anyone holding well over £120,000 who hasn't checked which account type they hold — the FSCS status differs (see Is Tide safe?).
Account opening: what it's actually like
Tide makes it easy to get your business banking moving from your phone. For most sole traders with a UK address, the in-app journey takes around 10 minutes: add your ID, personal details, trading description and address, then move through Tide’s verification flow. Many applicants are approved quickly, while some need a manual review. Limited companies add director and PSC details, and Tide’s integrated company-formation option can bring registration and account setup into the same journey.
The most common reasons for delays are mismatched address details, blurry ID photos, or businesses in higher-risk MCCs (gambling, crypto, adult). Have a clean photo of your ID and a recent address ready and the process is straightforward.
Plans and pricing
Tide sells four plans. In my view the Free plan is genuinely usable for a new business, and the case for upgrading is driven almost entirely by transfer volume and international card spend rather than by features.
| Feature | Free | Smart | Pro | Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly plan fee | £0 | £12.49 | £27.49 | £69.99 |
| Included UK transfers | 5/month | 30/month | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| International card FX fee | 2.75% | 0% | 0% | 0% |
| Additional current accounts | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Team cards | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Invoicing | 3/month | 3/month | 3/month | Unlimited |
| Instant Saver ongoing AER | 2% | 2.5% | 3% | 3.25% |
| Instant Saver introductory rate | Up to 4% AER | Up to 4% AER | Up to 4% AER | Up to 4% AER |

Tide runs four plans: Free, Smart, Pro and Max. Free has no monthly fee but a limited included-transfer allowance. Smart and Pro add more included transfers, additional accounts, team cards and plan features; Max adds unlimited invoicing. The right choice depends on your actual transfer, cash-deposit and international-payment pattern rather than the headline plan name.
Cost checks to make before choosing a plan
The plan fee is only one part of the decision. Start with a typical month of bank transfers, cash deposits, card use abroad and invoices, then compare it with the current Tide tariff. A Free plan may be sensible at low sterling-only volume; it is less compelling if you consistently exceed the included transfer allowance, make foreign-currency card purchases or take frequent cash payments.
- Transfers: Tide’s published Free allowance is five bank transfers each month, with 20p charges for transfers outside an allowance. Smart lists 30 included transfers, while Pro and Max list unlimited transfers. Model the volume you actually expect, rather than upgrading because a paid tier sounds more complete.
- Cash: Tide’s current support guidance lists PayPoint deposits at 3% of the deposit value. It also lists Post Office deposits at £2.50 up to £500 and percentage pricing above £500 that varies by plan. A cash-led business should compare this with a provider designed for regular cash handling.
- Overseas card spending: Tide lists a 2.75% foreign-card and overseas-GBP-card fee on Free, while paid plans list 0% card FX. This can justify checking Smart, but it does not automatically make an upgrade cheaper; compare the monthly fee against your actual overseas spend.
- Euro and international payments: Tide supports EUR SEPA and SWIFT routes, but plan charges and FX mark-ups depend on the payment type and plan. Check the in-app quote and current tariff if international payments are a core workflow.
Use the worked Tide fee examples for a scenario view, then compare the result with the full Tide fee guide before choosing a plan.
ClearBank account or e-money account: a practical check
Tide is a financial platform rather than a bank in its own right. Its current and savings accounts are powered by ClearBank, while some members hold an e-money account provided by PPS/PrePay Technologies. The distinction matters most when you hold material balances or need to explain protection arrangements to a co-director or accountant.
Tide’s own account-identification guidance says sort code 04-06-05 indicates a ClearBank account and 23-69-72 indicates a PPS account. Eligible ClearBank deposits can be covered by the FSCS up to the applicable limit; e-money balances are safeguarded instead. Check your statement footer or request an Account Verification Letter if you are unsure, then read our Tide safety and protection guide for the implications.
See our Tide fees page for the current plan breakdown, and budget based on your actual transfer volume — not the headline plan price. Most very early-stage sole traders are fine on Free; most growing limited companies move to Smart or Pro within their first year.
Features that earn their keep
- Invoicing — create, send and chase branded invoices, mark them paid automatically when funds arrive, and export for your accountant.
- Expense categorisation — every transaction gets tagged; the app surfaces a clean P&L view without manual bookkeeping.
- Accounting integrations — native links to Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent push transactions through automatically.
- Tide Instant Saver — variable-rate business savings account that holds the £5,000 needed for the second REFER200 reward (see Tide Instant Saver).
- Expense cards for team members, with per-card limits and merchant controls on paid plans.
- VAT and Self Assessment helpers, plus optional accountancy add-ons.
- Integrated company formation with Companies House if you haven't incorporated yet.
Safety and protection
Tide is authorised by the FCA. Business bank accounts issued via ClearBank are FSCS-eligible up to £120,000 per eligible depositor; Tide-issued e-money accounts are safeguarded under e-money rules but are not FSCS-protected. Day-to-day this rarely matters, but if you regularly hold large balances you should confirm which account type you're on and consider splitting funds across providers. Full detail is on our Is Tide safe? page.
Customer experience and support
Support is in-app chat. Response times are good on paid plans and acceptable on Free, though escalations to specialist teams can take longer than a traditional bank's phone line. The app itself is one of the more polished UK business banking experiences — fast, well-organised and reliable. Card freezing, transaction notifications and 3DS handling all work as you'd expect.
The REFER200 offer in context
REFER200 has a £75 card-spend component and a £125 Instant Saver component. Where the current terms apply, the card-spend condition is based on £100 of eligible Tide card transactions within 30 days of opening; the Saver condition is based on depositing £5,000 within seven days and maintaining the required balance for 30 days. Tide decides whether each condition and the account qualify, so assess the components separately and do not move working capital solely to pursue a potential reward.
Full step-by-step instructions and the common mistakes that can prevent a reward from qualifying are on our how to use REFER200 page.
Alternatives we'd genuinely consider
- Starling Business — fully licensed UK bank, full FSCS on the main account, slightly thinner built-in tooling. Best when account protection is the priority.
- Monzo Business — polished UX, useful tax pot on Pro, no current cashback. See Tide vs Monzo.
- Revolut Business — best for multi-currency and FX. See Tide vs Revolut.
- Mettle by NatWest — free, sole-trader-friendly, no current cashback. See Tide vs Mettle.
- ANNA Money — automated VAT and Corporation Tax filing. See Tide vs ANNA.
- Wise Business — multi-currency at the mid-market rate. See Tide vs Wise.
My verdict
My 4.4 out of 5 verdict is for a defined audience: a new UK sole trader or limited company that values a usable starter plan, invoicing and expense administration, and mostly sterling day-to-day banking. Tide is not the automatic choice for cash-heavy trading, sustained multi-currency balances or a business that prioritises a single licensed-bank model for large balances. In those cases I would compare Starling, Revolut Business, Wise or a cash-focused alternative first. REFER200 may be relevant for eligible new applicants, but it does not replace the suitability check. — Adam Short

Frequently asked questions
Is Tide better than Starling?+
Starling is a fully licensed UK bank with full FSCS on the main account; Tide is a financial platform with stronger built-in tooling and a current £200 cashback offer. For most brand-new businesses Tide wins on day-one value; for larger balances or branch-style support, Starling is the safer pick. See our Tide vs Starling comparison.
Can I use Tide as a sole trader?+
Yes — sole traders are Tide's largest customer segment. The Free plan is usually enough at low volumes; upgrade to Smart or Pro as income grows.
How long does Tide approval take?+
Most personal-name and limited company applications clear within a working day, and many sole traders are approved in minutes. Provide clean ID photos and consistent address details to avoid manual review.
Does Tide work with my accountant?+
Yes. Native integrations with Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent push transactions automatically. You can also export CSVs from the app.
Is the £200 cashback guaranteed?+
No. Tide makes the final eligibility decision. The two components are earned independently, so realistic outcomes are £0, £75, £125 or £200 depending on which conditions you meet within the deadlines.
Can Tide replace my accountant?+
No. Tide gives you clean transaction data and can connect to your accountant's software, but it doesn't file Self Assessment, prepare statutory accounts or sign off year-end. Pair Tide with an accountant for anything beyond basic sole-trader work.
Is Tide good for high-turnover businesses?+
Tide handles high-volume UK transfers comfortably on Pro and Max. Cash-heavy and FX-heavy businesses see less value — the per-deposit cash fees and international payment costs add up.
Can I have multiple users on a Tide account?+
Yes — paid plans support multiple team members and director access with per-user expense cards, limits and merchant controls.
Does Tide do payroll?+
Tide offers a payroll add-on for small employers. For larger headcount or complex schemes, integrate a dedicated payroll provider with your Tide account via your accounting software.
What happens if I want to leave Tide?+
You can close your Tide account at any time. Tide supports the Current Account Switch Service for eligible businesses, and a CASS switch is designed to complete in seven working days. If CASS is not available for your business, redirect client payments and Direct Debits over a few weeks, then close the old account.
