Can existing Tide customers use REFER200?
Short version: no. REFER200 is a new-customer promotion. This page explains exactly what that means, what happens if you try anyway, and what existing customers can do instead.

Priya Raman writes the practical, task-focused guides on Business Account Referral: what counts as card spend, what to do in your first 30 days, and how to fix a promotion that has not paid out. She previously worked in bookkeeping for UK micro-businesses and tests every step of a process before publishing it.

Why the offer is new-customer only
Referral promotions exist to acquire customers a provider does not already have. Tide's REFER200 terms therefore scope the cashback to new eligible applicants opening their first Tide business account. There is no version of the promotion that applies retrospectively to an account you already hold, and there is no code you can enter in the app after the fact to convert an existing account into a qualifying one.
This is the same structure used by most UK account-opening incentives. It is not specific to Tide, and it is not something support can override on request.
What counts as an existing customer
- You hold a live Tide business account. You are an existing customer, and the offer does not apply.
- You closed a Tide account previously. Tide's eligibility checks look at prior relationships, so a previously held account can still exclude you. Tide makes this determination, not us.
- You applied but were declined. You are not a customer, but a prior declined application usually reflects an underlying eligibility issue that a new application will hit again.
- You have a personal Tide product but no business account. Check the current terms before applying — this is the one genuinely grey case and Tide's own wording decides it.
What happens if you enter the code anyway
Nothing harmful, but nothing useful either. If an application is not eligible, the code simply does not attach a qualifying promotion to it. You will not receive an error that explains why, and you will not receive the cashback at the end of the qualifying period. The most common outcome we hear about is someone waiting 30 to 60 days for a payout that was never going to arrive.
We do not recommend opening a second or duplicate account in an attempt to qualify. Providers screen for it, applications made on that basis are commonly declined, and it risks the account you already rely on.
What existing customers can do instead
- Refer someone else. Tide runs its own in-app referral programme for existing customers. The reward structure differs from REFER200 and is set by Tide — check the referral section of your app for the current terms.
- Review your plan. If you are paying for a tier you have outgrown, or paying per-transfer charges on Free, a plan change is often worth more over a year than a one-off cashback. See Tide fees examples.
- Use Instant Saver properly. If you keep a working balance idle in the current account, moving it to Tide Instant Saver earns a variable AER that scales with your plan.
- Look at a second account. Plenty of UK businesses run two providers — one operational, one for FX or protection headroom. Current sign-up offers across the market are tracked on business bank account offers.
If you are a new applicant who forgot the code
That is a different problem with a different answer. See forgot to enter your Tide referral code — contact in-app support immediately rather than waiting, because the window for any remedy is short and Tide makes the final call.
Before you conclude you are ineligible
Run the eligibility checker. It walks the same questions in order and takes about a minute. If it confirms you are eligible, the step-by-step guide shows exactly where the code is entered during sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add REFER200 to my existing Tide account?+
No. REFER200 attaches to a new eligible application at sign-up. There is no way to apply it to an account you already hold, and support cannot add it retrospectively.
I closed my old Tide account. Can I reapply and use the code?+
Possibly not. Tide's eligibility checks consider prior relationships, and a previously held account can exclude you from a new-customer offer. Tide makes that determination during your application.
Can my limited company use the code if I already have a sole trader Tide account?+
This depends on Tide's current terms and how it treats the applicant entity. Check the terms before applying, and do not assume a different legal entity automatically resets eligibility.
Will I be penalised for trying?+
You will not be penalised for entering a code on an application that turns out to be ineligible — the promotion simply will not attach. Deliberately opening duplicate accounts to qualify is different and can lead to a declined or closed account.
Is there any cashback offer for existing Tide customers?+
Tide runs an in-app referral programme for existing customers with its own reward structure, set and changed by Tide. Check the referral section of your Tide app for the current terms.
My partner has a Tide account. Can I still use REFER200?+
Eligibility is assessed on the applicant, not the household. If you are a new eligible applicant in your own right, the offer can apply to your application.
How do I know for certain whether I am eligible?+
Tide is the only party that can confirm eligibility, because it applies the offer terms and its own account criteria. Our eligibility checker walks the published conditions so you can see where you stand before applying.
